The Cub Scout Pack 1226 Tiger Den (1st grade boys) visited a real Fire Station in December 2013. This was part of a regular Den meeting and satisfied Tiger requirement 2G: “Visit a police station or fire station. Ask someone who works there how he or she helps people in your community.” We are very fortunate to know Lyric Todkill, STE Band Director/Piping Instructor and STE usher. Lyric is also a volunteer firefighter. Station 3 is his Station and he was our tour guide. He showed us all around the station and the boys were fascinated. He had 2 rookies try on all their gear, including their air tanks. This allowed the boys to see what a fully suited firefighter looks and sounds like. If they ever encounter one, they will not be afraid. Then he let the boys suit up. They thought trying on this man-sized stuff was hysterical. They also learned how heavy all the gear is and how hot they would be in the Houston summer, or in a fire. Then we looked in the ambulance and the various fire trucks at Station 3. They have an enormous ladder truck, one of the biggest in the state. The boys got to get into the trucks, honk the horn and turn on the lights. Finally Lyric took the boys outside to “flow some water.” They got to work the firehose! They thoroughly watered the grass behind the fire station, as well as each other. The Cub Scouts learned about fire safety and volunteering from Lyric and his colleagues at Fire Station 3. Each boy also brought a new toy for the Toys for Tots program, and learned about giving to those less fortunate. We are so thankful to Lyric and everyone at Station 3 for their hospitality!
