Monthly Healing Service

Saint Thomas’ will begin offering a monthly Healing Service on the second Sunday of each month after our 10:30 am Morning Prayer service. Many in our parish are suffering under various ailments and it is good and right for their brothers and sisters in Christ to pray for them. We do that through the prayer list we release and which can be found on our website and in our order of worship. We would also like to do this in a more personal way at the church.

If you would like prayer for any ailment — physical, spiritual, psychological, or emotional — please to come to this service. After Morning Prayer, the clergy will greet parishioners and visitors while Bryan plays the postlude. After the greeting and postlude, the clergy will come to the sanctuary and those in need of prayer will kneel at the altar rail. This prayer will then be prayed over each person in need:

O BLESSED Redeemer, relieve, we beseech thee, by thy indwelling power, the distress of this thy servant; release him from sin, and drive away all pain of soul and body, that being restored to soundness of health, he may offer thee praise and thanksgiving; who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

They will then receive the anointing of oil with this prayer:

I ANOINT thee with oil, In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; beseeching the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all thy pain and sickness of body being put to flight, the blessing of health may be restored unto thee. Amen.

That’s it. It’s nothing strange or unusual — just the prayers of Christian brothers and sisters for other Christian brothers and sisters. This is a practice that has strong lineage from the ancient church down through the Reformation era to the present day.

We want you to know you are not alone in your ailment, whatever that might be. Your clergy and your fellow Christians want to pray earnestly for you and for your healing. Many of us do so individually using our prayer list; we would also like to do so in this new service.
