Recovery Update, 9/11

Dear STE Community,

We were delighted to see our Preschool students back on campus today. Nearby, our Upper School students gladly took on the task of cleaning out their lockers and preparing for their temporary move to HCA. We have had additional signs that our campus will soon be settled into a normal routine. Our Highland dance teachers have announced that after school dance classes will resume Wednesday, September 13 with the regular schedule. Lower and Middle Schools have rescheduled their respective Parent Nights for Tuesday, September 19 at 6:30 p.m. This will be a joint Parent Night for both schools. More details will be available soon.

If you are the parent of a Lower or Middle School student moving to the Upper School building (all Lower and Middle School classes except for 4th and 5th grade), we hope you plan to come by Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. to see the facilities and find your child’s room. Our faculty have worked hard to ensure the students feel at home and can find their new locations easily.

All our parents are invited to hear Dr. Julie Kaplow speak Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. on strategies for helping our students process the destruction they have seen in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. To accommodate as many parents as possible, we have relocated this event to the courtyard. Childcare will be provided in the theatre for all Lower and Middle School students who are on campus from the Upper School building visit.

Also on Tuesday evening, we will be collecting donations of used uniforms for Lower and Middle School students affected by the flood. We will have a uniform table set up outside the Upper School building. Starting at 6:30 p.m., you can bring your donations to the table. If your family was affected by the flood and you are in need of uniform pieces, stop by the table and let us know what you need. Volunteers will be matching donations with needs, and affected families can pick up their uniforms at the end of the evening.

Volunteer HQ

We will have another opportunity for adult and student volunteers to work on campus tomorrow from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Work will be focused on Lower and Middle School classrooms as well as the rectory. As you know, students under 16 should be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. For STE’s protection, we are asking all volunteers to sign a liability waiver on the first day of volunteer work. Please save the date for another community workday this Saturday, September 16, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We will provide a lunch of pulled pork barbecue sandwiches, fruit, and chips.

We’ve added new information to our Hurricane Harvey FAQ. Be sure to check it out for information on procedures that will change to accommodate the temporary shift in classrooms for Lower and Middle School.

We have received more offers of assistance from individuals, other schools, and organizations in Houston and beyond. Please continue to share to let others know about our story and spread the word about our recovery efforts.
