As part of our on-going series about the work of the Christian Community Service Center (CCSC), we present this story of one volunteer’s experience at CCSC. These stories, written by CCSC volunteers and those they serve, show how CCSC represents our church in serving Houston’s needy on a daily basis. Interested in helping CCSC? Prayer for a Third Grader
Several years ago I volunteered to help with distribution for CCSC’s Back To School program. This was a life-changing experience for me. Suddenly I was able to put a face, a name and real life stories to missions.
The first CCSC Back To School program I worked, I met a young girl who had come with her mother to collect their family’s school supplies. The girl was about nine or ten years old and she was acting as her mother’s interpreter. We had a fun time looking through the clothes to find nice, gently worn clothing in just the right sizes for each member of their family. Next, we moved into the school supplies area and began by picking up school supplies for the girl’s sisters and brothers.
When the time came to collect the young girl’s supplies, I could see that she was worried and upset. I knelt down and asked her what was wrong and she explained that there was a mistake on the form. The form stated that she was going into fourth grade. She told me the form was incorrect. Very quietly she explained that she had failed the third grade and would therefore need the third grade supplies again this year.
I gave her a hug and told her that I thought this was going to be a very good year for her because she would know how things worked and would be able to help the other students. I assured her that she would be on my prayer list and that I would pray that she would have a great year. She gave me a beautiful smile and seemed very pleased to know that someone would be praying for her.
I pray God is continuing to bless this little girl.
