We Are Searching for a Family Minister

Do you know any children, youth or family ministry rockstars who could take their knowledge and experience to build a program in a parish striving to live out their mission of offering a warm welcome, transcendent worship, deep learning and joyful service?

We at Saint Thomas’ Episcopal Church in Houston are seeking a dynamic, experienced leader to partner with our parish in revitalizing our children and youth ministries. The full-time Director of Family Ministry will steward this growth through connecting with the children, youth, and parents of Saint Thomas’ to instill a lifetime of faith and to nurture Christian relationships.

Saint Thomas’ is a pastoral-sized parish located in the Meyerland neighborhood in southwest Houston. Our traditional liturgy is grounded in the 1928 Book of Common Prayer. Within the surrounding community, Saint Thomas’ is known both for our robust music program and offerings as well as the award-winning Saint Thomas’ Episcopal School, a K-12 independent school. Saint Thomas’ is in the process of undergoing incredible physical renovation as well as ministry transformation. After severe damage from Hurricane Harvey in 2017, we are rebuilding and renovating our grounds including our sanctuary and a new upper school building, which will provide space for our church-specific ministries to claim other space. Meanwhile, we are in the process of a Ministry Architects transformation, working towards both sustainability and growth.

Needless to say, it is a very exciting time to be joining the Saint Thomas’ ministry team. The Director of Family Ministry will be charged with working alongside the transformation team, Christian Education Committee, clergy and parishioners to build and lead the children’s and youth ministries. The primary responsibilities can be reviewed in three categories: relationships, programs & events, and volunteers. Some examples include:

  • Knowing families “on the rolls” and reaching out to first time visitors
  • Communicating with children, youth and their families
  • Praying for all in their ministry
  • Creating a welcoming environment for families among programs and events
  • Overseeing children and youth formation, including education, fellowship, and outreach
  • Advocating for children and youth in the larger parish context
  • Building relationships with ministry volunteers, providing both spiritual nourishment and practical training
  • Ensuring adherence to best practices surrounding Safeguarding God’s Children

Saint Thomas’ is looking for a leader with enthusiasm, organization, leadership skills and a team player mindset. The ideal candidate would hold deep knowledge of the Episcopal church and experience in building or leading sustainable ministries within a parish context. Strong relational and communication skills are a must have, as well as a talent for engaging young people. The job is likely to require at least 3-5 years of relevant experience, and a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. Candidates with additional education like a Masters or a concentration in a related field (religion, education, child/youth development, Biblical studies, etc) would be particularly desirable.

So, do you know anyone who might be interested and a good fit for this role? Please feel free to forward this article and pass along information to anyone you think would be a candidate for the Director of Family Ministry role at Saint Thomas’ Episcopal Church. Or, to anyone who might know someone! Thanks in advance for spreading the word.

Qualified candidates should send a resume and cover letter to Martha Whitesides at martha.whitesides@ministryarchitects.com.
